Code for the Road

What is your Code for the Road?

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a goodbye.
                                             Graham Nash

Recognize the infamous Lombard Street of San Francisco?  Many a driver's brakes have burned up on those hairpin turns!  That road is not unlike the road of life--with its whole host of turns that may be beyond us. Even when we see them, as they do on Lombard Street, it is still difficult to navigate.

So what is your code for the road of life? For some, just to see Lombard Street is enough to turn back--seeing is believing you don't want to go there.  Others take it on and have at it.  While still others are content to walk it and smell the flowers along the way.

I have seen this quotation in several forms and attributed to different authors.  This one apparently came from Mother Teresa:

"People are often unreasonable and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.
If you are honest, people may cheat you.
Be honest anyway.
If you find happiness, people may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough.
Give your best anyway.”

~Mother Teresa
