Spring Surprise!
Right in the middle of Hurricane Sandy, my son came and found me and told me to look at the Plum Tree in the front yard. The wind pulled it straight out of the ground and tossed it across the yard! The area trees all seemed fine--but something got a hold of this plum tree, some giant pair of hands and ripped it from the ground. The next day, I replanted it carefully and staked it out for support. The winter months did not disturb it--certainly it stayed upright and dead or alive--still made a good front yard ornament for us.
Easter morning--it blossomed! The small flowers came all at once. A magnificent bouquet that spoke the powers of regeneration, of life within that would not be denied.
As John Updike has said--"let's not mock God with metaphor or even analogy" about the resurrection. It is a whole new life and given by the grace of God. We are not replanted. We are raised up. Alleluia!
