The TV was playing as I walked
into the room, and the story of John Lennon’s murder was being retold. Was this more about Lennon or his deranged killer
Mark Chapman? The question hung in the air for me—why is it that people of
peace are those who are slain in this world of ours? Jesus? Gandhi? Martin Luther King Jr? Maybe that’s why they are killed – because the
world fundamentally rejects the peace that they stand for.
The epiphany for me was to
remember Lennon’s phrase, often quoted without his attribution.
“Life is what happens to you when
you are planning something else.”
Yes that was Lennon. That while he was planning something else for
his life—his life was taken. But while
others plan for war, maybe peace will come, still comes in the heart despite
what the world plans.
